Surrender To Being Held
a poetry prompt
One of my favorite Substacks, Poetry Outdoors, has been posting weekly writing prompts based on poems by Mary Oliver. It has been a wonderful practice that I look forward to each week, and what inspired the poem below. If you want to check it out, this was the original post.
It has saved my life to know this—
Surrender to being held,
By the soft grass as you lay upon its tendrils.
Or the gritty sand as it supports your sinking feet.
Surrender to the warmth of the sun
as it kisses your bare shoulders.
Or the light of the moon
as it illuminates the darkness you’ve found yourself in.
It has saved my life to know this—
Surrender is strength
clothed in tenderness.
Surrender to being held.
Joy Bomb
Each time I share on Substack, I try to include what is bringing me joy in this moment. I live in the Pacific Northwest and for most of the year we have gray skies. But when Spring and Summer show up? Dang, it’s beautiful.
Well spring has sprung, and the cherry blossoms are bringing me tremendous joy at the moment.
I’d love to hear what your source of joy is this week.
